How to Yoni Steam at Home

Yoni steaming at home is easy. You don't need any special equipment or tools to create this special ritual for yourself in the comfort of your own home.

What you’ll need:

  • Stainless steel pot with lid (dedicated for yoni steaming & cleaning your menstrual cup from now on)

  • 1 litre water

  • 2-3 TBSP Yoni Steaming Herbs

  • Towels for cloaking

  • Warm Socks

Optional/ Ideas for a comfortable session:

  • incense stick/ candles

  • yoni steaming chair

  • herbal tea

  • relaxed music

  • journal

  • book

Method

  1. Drink a glass of water - you want to make sure you are hydrated before steaming. It is also a good idea to pee and clean your yoni area before steaming.

  2. Bring the water to a boil in your designated pot. Once boiling add the yoni steaming herbs and let simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes.

  3. Remove herb infused water from the heat and leave it covered for 5 minutes. In the meantime, set up your yoni steaming area and set the mood. A yoni steaming seat is not necessary, but it can add extra comfort.  There are other ways that you can yoni steam in the comfort of your own home. You can crouch over the pot on the floor or use your toilet bowl (cleaned & disinfected).

  4. Decide on your place for steaming, put on some warm socks, light a few candles & incense to create a relaxed environment. Maybe you would like to listen to some relaxing music or just embrace the silence. During your steam you may want to meditate, read or journal. Try and avoid any distractions and technology where possible. Embrace the natural essence of this self-loving practice and use the time to connect to your body.

  5. Take the pot of herb infused water and position it accordingly.  If you are opting for the crouching method, it is a good idea to place a towel under the hot pot to protect the floor and add cushioning, it is also nice to use cushions under the knees for extra comfort and support.

  6. If using the toilet method, use a towel underneath the pot to protect the toilet bowl from the heat of the pan and to add stability. Ensure that the seat is able to close whilst the pot is in there so you are able to sit over it comfortably.

  7. Take the lid off of the pot and check the temperature of the steam, ensuring it is not going to be too hot for you. The pot will be hot to touch, so please use caution when steaming.

  8. If you are crouching, place your knees either side of the pot and wrap 1 or 2 large towels around your waist in order to trap the steam. I find it comfortable to lean forward onto my forearms and begin deep mediative breathing to settle into the yoni steam.

  9. If using the toilet method, the same applies, wrap towels around your waist and lower to sit on the toilet seat over the steaming herbs, ensuring that the towels traps the steam so that the steam can do its magical wonders.

  10. Those with short cycles (27 days or less), frequent bleeding/ irregular bleeding, as well as those with an IUD (Intrauterine Device), should steam for a maximum of 10 minutes. Please stop after 10 minutes.

  11. Those with longer cycles (28/30 days +) without an IUD can steam for longer. We suggest 20 minutes for the first steam and up-to 30 minutes for the steams after that. You may need to re-heat the herbs for a steam of 30 minutes.

You can keep the herb water in the fridge to use in 1 more steam the day after.

When to steam?

As a general rule of thumb, steaming should take place around 3 days after your period has finished and around 3 days before your next period is due to arrive. Please don't steam if you are menstrating, ovulating, pregnant, or have any types of vaginal infections.

Aftercare

You will feel very relaxed after steaming and could also be emotional. It is recommended to hydrate yourself, sip on a glass of water or herbal tea, and lay down in bed or relax on the sofa. Keep warm and don’t partake in any intense physical activity for the rest of the day.
